Five Fun Facts About Groundhog Day

Learn about the furry prognosticator on the end of winter.

Well, the world's most famous groundhog saw his shadow today, meaning six more weeks of winter are in store. But with highs still in the 40s, who can complain?

Here are a few facts about the prognosticating pet from Pennsylvania:

1. Punxsutawney Phil’s yearly Groundhog Day predictions are entered into the Congressional Record, according to About.com.

2. Phil’s predictions have been right 39 percent of the time, according to Stormfax.com.

3. Groundhogs got the nickname “whistle-pig” in some regions because they’ll make a high-pitched noise to alert their families when they’re in danger, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

4. The movie Groundhog Day was not filmed in Punxsutawney, but in Woodstock, IL, which is 45 miles from lead actor Bill Murray’s hometown, according to IMDb.

5. Groundhogs are one of the few animals that truly hibernate, according to groundhog.org. They fall into a deep coma, their body temperature drops to just above freezing and their breathing nearly stops.
