TWIN CITIES, MN — Twin Cities drivers will have two major highway closures to navigate in the coming days, including a months-long closure of Highway 280 and a weekend shutdown of Interstate 35W in Burnsville.
Southbound Highway 280 will close beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, as crews continue safety improvements and road and bridge repairs between Interstate 94 in St. Paul and Highway 36/I-35W in Roseville, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Northbound Highway 280 has already been closed since April 13. Both directions are expected to remain closed through late August, reopening before the 2026 Minnesota State Fair, MnDOT said.
During the closure, through traffic will be detoured using I-35W or I-94, Highway 36 and I-35E. MnDOT said there will be no signed local detours, and drivers should expect more traffic on nearby streets including Cleveland, Raymond and Snelling avenues.
I-35W — May 4
Meanwhile, I-35W will close in both directions between I-494 and the I-35E/I-35W split in Burnsville from 9 p.m. Friday, May 1, through 5 a.m. Monday, May 4.
All ramps on I-35W in that stretch will also close while crews remove the eastbound Highway 13 bridge, patch northbound I-35W and prepare for traffic shifts.
During the I-35W closure, drivers can use I-35, I-35E, Highway 77 and I-494, MnDOT said.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting.
