TWIN CITIES, MN — Twin Cities metro drivers are looking at a busy stretch of construction closures on two major interstates over the next week, with the timing bleeding into the July 4 holiday.
Here is what is coming.
I-94 WESTBOUND: THIS WEEKEND
Westbound I-94 closes at 10 p.m. Friday, June 26, and does not reopen until 5 a.m. Monday, June 29.
The shutdown covers the stretch between I-694/I-494 in Woodbury and I-35E in St. Paul, running through Maplewood and Oakdale.
MnDOT is closing the highway so crews can paint bridges as part of a larger project repairing nine bridges over I-94 and I-35E in St. Paul, along with the full replacement of the John Ireland Boulevard bridge.
Detour: northbound I-694 to westbound I-694 to southbound I-694.
The full project is expected to wrap up in September.
I-494: FOUR NIGHTS STARTING JUNE 29
Just as I-94 reopens Monday morning, overnight closures begin on I-494. Crews need to pour the 12th Avenue bridge deck between I-35W and Highway 77 in Bloomington, Edina and Richfield. Closures run 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly.
The schedule:
— Westbound I-494 closed nightly, June 29 through July 1 (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.): between Highway 77 and I-35W. Detour: northbound Highway 77 to westbound Highway 62 to southbound I-35W.
— Eastbound I-494 closed, July 1 to July 2 (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.): between Highway 77 and I-35W. Westbound I-494 also drops to one lane during this window, and the ramp from westbound I-494 to Lyndale Avenue closes. Detour: northbound I-35W to eastbound Highway 62 to southbound Highway 77.
— Eastbound I-494 one lane, July 2 to July 3 (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.): between I-35W and Highway 77.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change.
