📰 News we're reading

• Twin Cities PBS Is Changing Its Name: Here's Why (patch.com) — Viewers in St. Paul will soon see Twin Cities PBS rebranded as Minnesota PBS on Sept. 1, reflecting a major expansion that brings southern Minnesota's KSMQ under its umbrella. Leaders say the change, prompted by federal funding cuts, will protect PBS access, kids programming, and emergency information for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans while keeping the same local stories and educational focus.

• Minnesota Takes Texas To Court Over Stalled Extradition Of ICE Agent Christian Castro (patch.com) — From St. Paul, Attorney General Keith Ellison is suing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to force the extradition of ICE agent Christian Castro, accused of shooting into an occupied Minneapolis home. Minnesota officials argue Abbott is legally required to sign the warrant, citing constitutional extradition rules and past cooperation between the two states on similar cases.

• Walz: 'The Fight Is Over' As He Moves To Block Mining Near Boundary Waters (patch.com) — From his office in St. Paul, Gov. Tim Walz signed an executive order halting nonferrous mining permits and reviews in the Rainy River Headwaters that feed the Boundary Waters. The move directs state agencies in St. Paul to pause new leases, step back from federal reviews, and draft legislation to permanently ban copper and nickel mining in the protected watershed.
