These MN School Districts Won, Lost Big Funding Votes: List

One request lost by just 10 votes, and a $350 million plan went down. See how your school district fared.

ST. PAUL, MN — Minnesota voters said no far more often than yes when school districts asked them for money Tuesday, rejecting 55 of 83 school ballot questions, according to unofficial results.

The questions came from 63 districts. Voters approved everything their district asked for in 21 of them and rejected everything in 38.

Alden-Conger, Caledonia, Centennial and Robbinsdale each had mixed results.

The results come from the Minnesota Secretary of State, with all precincts reporting in each race as of Wednesday afternoon. They are not final until they are canvassed.

The biggest request of the night failed. Elk River Area Schools sought $350 million in bonds, plus a capital levy for $90 million in projects, for work that included a new high school in Otsego. Just 44.5% of voters said yes.

Robbinsdale Area Schools fared better with a similar-sized request. Voters approved $343 million in bonds with 52.9% in favor, along with a second $17 million question, but rejected a third question for $53 million.

Some races came down to a handful of votes. Centennial's $108.89 million bond question was losing 8,850 to 8,840, while the question in Lynd failed 257 to 247. In the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale district, an $800 per pupil levy failed by 337 votes out of more than 35,000 cast.

The results came on the same ballot in which more than 2 million Minnesotans voted yes on a constitutional amendment sending more money to schools without raising taxes.

Some districts now face hard choices. In Brainerd, where a levy failed, the district had warned of budget cuts that could include closing at least one more school and raising class sizes, KAXE reported.

InForum reported that Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton's levy failed for the second straight year, this time by a wider margin.

Here is every result, with the share of voters who said yes. Dollar amounts come from the ballot language. Per pupil levies help pay for day-to-day operations, while bonds and capital levies generally pay for buildings, equipment and other projects.
