In Emotional Letter, Dayton Says He Will Have Surgery To Remove Cancer

"You have lifted my spirits and given me both hope and resolve," Dayton said Tuesday. "I am deeply grateful to you."

In an emotional letter posted on Facebook, Gov. Mark Dayton announced Tuesday that he will have surgery to remove his prostate and all of his prostate cancer.

"As you probably know, I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer," Dayton said. "Thankfully, tests last week showed no signs that the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, which greatly improves my chances of survival."

A day after collapsing while delivering a his State of the State address, Dayton revealed to lawmakers Jan. 24 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer the week prior.

Dayton, who recently turned Thursday, was initially said either surgery or radiation from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester could be a part of the treatment.

"I have decided upon surgery to remove my prostate and, hopefully, all of the cancer," Dayton continued. "It is presently scheduled for the morning of Thursday, March 2nd, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I am told that I will likely need to spend one night in the hospital; however, after the surgery, I will be in constant contact with Lt. Governor Tina Smith and my Senior Staff throughout my time at Mayo."
