Minnesota Homeowners: How to Make Sure You Get Your Bigger Property Tax Refund
The state is automatically adding a 15 percent boost to 2025 refunds, but there are a few things you need to know.
ST. PAUL, MN — Minnesota homeowners have known for weeks that a bigger property tax refund was coming. Now the state has released the details on how it's actually getting the money to them.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced this month that it has worked out the logistics for delivering the one-time 15 percent increase to 2025 Homestead Credit Refunds, and the main message is: don't do anything extra.
Homeowners who have already filed will have their returns automatically adjusted. The department will not send a letter notifying you of the change.

Just expect a refund roughly 15 percent larger than what you filed for, arriving in late summer or early fall on the usual schedule.
For homeowners who haven't filed yet, the deadline is August 16, 2027.

File before mid-July and the department will add the increase on its end. File after mid-July and the boost will already be built into the system when you submit. Either way, you get it.
One thing to avoid: don't amend your return to try to claim the increase yourself. The state is handling it.
To qualify, you must have household income under $142,490, owned and occupied your Minnesota homestead as of January 2, 2026, and have no delinquent property taxes.
