Photos: Saint Paul Fire Department's Busy Week

Among the blazes Saint Paul firefighters responded to this month was one caused by careless smoking that resulted in $153,000 in damages.

The Saint Paul Fire Department had a busy week, and there are photos to prove it. During the week of Jan. 4 through Jan. 10, the fire officials reportedly responded to 855 calls for service.

Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities and photos of those events:

Delivery

On Jan. 4 at 9:01 a.m., Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood for a pregnant 30 year old in labor. The female give birth to a healthy baby girl while in the ambulance. Mother and daughter were transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.

House Fire

Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a dwelling fire on the 1000 block of Walsh Street on Jan. 6 at 2:43 a.m. The fire was reported when a neighbor awoke to seeing a flickering light and realized the house next door was on fire. No one was home at the time of the fire. Damages are estimated at $70,000. The cause of the fire is undermined at this time.

Garage/House Fire, Careless Smoking

On Jan. 7 at 6:04 a.m., Saint Paul firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on the 100 block of Stevens Street West. They arrived to find a two-car attached garage burning with fire extending into the house. The investigation determined the fire started in an area of the garage where the occupants stated there had been a small metal pail used to discard cigarettes next to a mattress and recycling. An occupant had been smoking in the garage approximately 45 minutes before the fire. The fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. Damages are estimated at $153,000.

Closet Fire, Careless Smoking

Saint Paul firefighters responded to a report of smoke in an apartment building on the 100 block of McKnight Road North on Jan. 7 at 3:09 p.m. They arrived to find a smoldering fire in a closet. The occupant of the apartment unit was found asleep in another room and was unaware of the fire. The occupant was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. The investigation determined the fire was caused by cigarette butts discarded in the closet. The smoke alarm was found disconnected in the apartment. Damages are estimated at $3,000.

Garage/House Fire

On Jan. 8 at 10:29 a.m., Saint Paul firefighters responded to a garage and house fire on the 100 block of Maryland Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find a shed fire which spread to two vehicles and the house. The occupant stated he had an electric heater plugged into a power strip, which was being used to keep batteries warm for his wind turbine. Damages are estimated at $19,100.

Stabbing

Jan. 9 at 8:31 a.m., Saint Paul firefighter/paramedics and EMT's were called to a home in the north end neighborhood for a 15-year-old male who was stabbed in the back with an unknown object. He was treated and transported to an area hospital.

Labor

Saint Paul firefighter/paramedics and EMTs responded to the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood on Jan. 8 at 3:49 p.m. for a pregnant 20-year-old who thought her water may have broken. She was evaluated and transported to an area hospital.

Vehicle Fire

Saint Paul firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire in a parking lot on Jan. 9 at 4:32 a.m. on the 1200 block of Hazelwood Avenue. Firefighters found a pickup truck engine compartment engulfed in fire with fire damage to two nearby vehicles. The pickup truck was found to be under a recall for the cruise control switch problem. Damages are estimated at $6,100.
