A lot of decks in and around North St. Paul went up in the 1990s and early 2000s, which puts them somewhere between 20 and 30 years old. July is when they carry the most weight, and the parts that fail are almost never the boards underfoot. A few things are worth walking out and looking at.
Start where the deck meets the house. The ledger board is the single most common failure point on an older deck. Look for rust streaks running down from the fasteners, a gap between the ledger and the siding, or missing flashing along the top edge. Soft or stained trim just above the connection is another sign. Water that gets behind a ledger rots the rim joist from the inside while the deck surface still looks fine.
Then the posts and footings. Push on a post and see whether anything moves. Check whether the base sits in standing water, whether metal at the base is corroding, and whether a post rests directly on soil rather than concrete. Cracked or heaved concrete matters here, since frost lifts footings that were never set deep enough.
Guardrails come next. Rail posts loosen before anything else does. Give the railing a firm push at the corners and at the top of the stairs, where the leverage is greatest. On the stairs themselves, look for split stringers, cupped treads, and any tread that feels spongy.
Last, the small stuff that adds up. Older decks were often built with fasteners that corrode against modern treated lumber. Check the cut ends of boards, the spots where boards land over joists, and anywhere two pieces meet and trap moisture. If a screwdriver tip sinks in under light pressure, that is rot, not weathering.
Loose boards and gray, tired-looking surfaces are cosmetic and can wait. Anything involving the ledger, the posts, the footings, or how the guardrail attaches to the frame is structural, and that is a different conversation. Structural work usually means a licensed contractor, and depending on how much gets replaced, the city may need to see plans. Better to sort that out in July than to find out during a gathering in August.
