South St. Paul Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Killing Roommate

SOUTH ST. PAUL, MN — A South St. Paul man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing his roommate last year, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.

Jacob John Audie, 37, was sentenced for the death of Michael Maurice Schille, 72, of South St. Paul. Judge Kathryn Iverson handed down the sentence in Dakota County District Court.

Audie was found guilty Aug. 19 on one count of premeditated first-degree murder and one count of intentional second-degree murder following a stipulated facts trial.

A Dakota County grand jury had indicted him on the same two counts in September 2025.

According to court documents, Audie called 911 at about 8:48 p.m. on April 11, 2025, and reported that he had shot Schille inside their South St. Paul apartment.

Responding officers found Schille on a couch in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to the left side of his face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers also found an AR-style rifle in the living room, rifle magazines on the kitchen table and a table in the back bedroom, and an empty casing on the couch near Schille's body. Audie was detained in the apartment building's parking lot and complied with officers.

Audie told investigators he had been Schille's caretaker and the two had lived together for the past year or two. He said he shot Schille using the victim's rifle.

An autopsy by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office found the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the death a homicide.

Audie remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail awaiting transfer to the Department of Corrections.
