Minnesota Senate Passes Sunday Liquor Sales Bill

On Monday, the Minnesota Senate passed a bill repealing the state's prohibition-era ban on Sunday liquor sales.

UPDATE: 12:45 p.m. – On a vote of 38-28, the Minnesota Senate passed HF 30, which would make off-sale intoxicating liquor sales on Sundays legal.

Next Steps

The differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill will have to be reconciled before it heads to Gov. Mark Dayton's desk. Dayton has said in the past that he will sign a law allowing Sunday sales.

10 a.m. – The legalization of Sunday liquor sales faces one last major hurdle this week. On Monday, the Minnesota Senate is expected to vote on a bill repealing the state's ban on Sunday liquor sales.

At 11 a.m., the Senate is scheduled to debate S.F. 1086, a bill "permitting off-sale intoxicating liquor sales on Sunday."

Last week, the Minnesota House overwhelmingly passed a bill lifting the ban on off-sale Sunday liquor sales by an 85-45 vote Monday.

Liquor laws

According to Minnesota statute 340A.504, no sale of "intoxicating liquor" may be made by an off-sale licensee:
(1) on Sundays;
(2) before 8:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m. on Monday through Saturday;
(3) on Thanksgiving Day;
(4) on Christmas Day, Dec. 25; or
(5) after 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
