Just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, police were called to the area of Marshall Avenue and Cretin Avenue North on a reported restraining order violation.
The woman called 911 and said she had protection against a man who was now following her as she was driving in the area.
The woman was trying to drive away from him, but he was following and intentionally ramming his car into hers, authorities said. He was also armed with a handgun and had broken a window of her vehicle, according to investigators.
An officer confronted the man, who then fired a handgun at the officer and struck him in the lower leg, authorities said.
The officer returned fire striking the man. Medical crews responded and the man was treated at the scene before he was taken to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The injured officer was driven to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries in a squad car by another officer.
The woman involved was not injured, according to investigators. The officer injured in the incident was wearing a body camera that was activated, according to officials.
"Due to the nature of this incident, we requested the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to handle the investigation," the St. Paul Police Department said in a news release.
"The officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting."
