A fresh Start

Now that we are through the first week of 2014, the New Year resolutions have had a chance to sink or swim. Whether you are working toward a good new habit, or trying very hard to quit a bad old one, be proud of yourself for every step forward and be compassionate about those slips backward. Don’t beat yourself up if you are having trouble living out your end-of-year hopes, change is hard! If you find yourself feeling stuck on your BIG change, give yourself a momentum boost by doing something small that affects your daily life. Pick something achievable that has perhaps been bugging you for a long time…clean out that makeup drawer! Yes, honey, we know about your makeup drawer problem, but only because we all have that makeup drawer problem. Use these guidelines:

  • Check any perfume older than two years to see if the scent has altered and if you still like it. If you don’t, chuck it.

  • Discard any mascara that is getting dry or clumpy, which means it will look bad and is probably breeding bacteria. Three months is a good life expectancy for a tube of used mascara. Throw it out earlier if you have had an eye infection to avoid a re-infection.

  • Sunscreen is good as long as it hasn’t separated, changed in smell or become discolored, but if you aren’t sure, toss after the expiration date or a year after purchase.

  • Face creams in a jar are good for nine to twelve months and then get iffy from the bacteria that ride along on your fingers. Creams in a pump are good for twelve months. (Extra hint: Alpha-hydroxy creams get more concentrated and can cause irritation if they are not tightly sealed, so cap them tightly between uses.)

  • Nail polish can start fading and separating after nine months to a year. If you see that happening, it won’t go on smoothly. Save yourself some aggravation and replace it.

  • Look at all the eye shadows, lipsticks and other products you have tried and not loved. Every product you didn’t like has taught you something about what you really want. Thank them for the lesson. Now throw them away.

  • Wipe out the drawer interior thoroughly.

  • Use small baskets or boxes to organize what you actually use frequently. Stash the rest in a bag somewhere else (you can deal with that drawer or space under the sink next time.)

  • If you have some gaps now that need refilling, remember that you don’t save money buying products you will end up throwing out. High-quality products go on better, last longer, and are healthier for your skin than the cheap stuff.
