Dog and Cat Perish in Blaze at Shakopee Home

Crews were called to the 9100 block of 13th Avenue E. around 1 p.m. Thursday.

A dog and at least one cat perished in a Shakopee house fire Thursday afternoon, according to fire department officials.

Several fire departments were called to the 9100 block of 13th Avenue E. at 12:41 p.m. and reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the one-story dwelling.

A young woman and child were in the residence at the time of the fire and they were able to escape, according to Shakopee Fire Captain Tom Pitschneider.

Firefighters fought the blazed but exited the structure at one point when they encountered spongy floors, according to radio traffic.

Crews used axes and saws to cut through the exterior walls to access the basement, where it appears the bulk of the fire was located. Smoke, from brown to gray to white, poured from the man-made openings, as well as the roof of the home as firefighters directed their hoses into the basement.

In addition to the , firefighters from Eden Prairie, Prior Lake, Mdewakanton Emergency Services and Savage were on the scene. No injuries were reported.
