Hey Kids, Help Celebrate America's Birthday in Shakopee

Do your kids like watching parades? How would they like being in one?

This Friday, Shakopee will hold its annual Happy Birthday America Parade at Lions Park. Parade line-up begins at 10 a.m. and the parade begins at 10:30.  

Every year the event draws about 150 participants, depending on the weather. They range in age from toddlers being pulled by parents to 8 and 9-year-olds driving their own bikes or scotters.

Participants are encouraged by organizers to show their pride in the United States and to decorate their bikes, scooters and wagons accordingly.  

The parade starts and ends in Lions Park. It is led through local streets by a ladder truck from the and a police car follows at the rear of the parade.

After the parade there will be entertainment by children's entertainer Wendy’s Wiggle, Jiggle, and Jam. There will also be free popsicles for parade participants.   
Shakopee Recreation Supervisor Sherry Dvorak says the parade has taken place annually for more than 30 years. Only once in her 20 years with the city was the event moved indoors due to rain.

“That year, the ice arena was new and we had parade participants walk around the rink with the ice taken out.” recalls Dvorak.
