Understanding that Pain and Function do NOT go hand in hand is critical to get the MOST out of your Chiropractic Care.
When someone exhibits a structural shift in the spine (misaligned joint in the spine) there are complex physiologic processes that do not always reach the cortex in the brain – the area of the brain where you are consciously aware and can feel pain. This is why an individual can present with an initial bout of back pain and further examination reveals severe spinal degenerative changes that have been taking place without any pain or any other conscious symptoms for years.
Based on physiologic, biomechanical and histological research we know that a joint that does not have proper motion and alignment will degenerate – and this process begins in as little as 14 days. We also know that improper joint motion and misalignment are often asymptomatic,
meaning – you can’t feel it.
It’s really no different than your car being out of alignment or the foundation of your house sinking on one side. If a Structural Shift is present in your spine, this in turn will affect the spinal nerves causing an assortment of Secondary Conditions (dull aches, pain, muscle tension, disc issues, headaches, sciatica) along with arthritic changes. At Brooks Chiropractic, I focus on Structural Optimization of the spine, by specifically addressing the Structural Shifts (mis-alignments) that may have occurred in your spine due to the stressors of living life.
But lets face it… You might not care about Structural Shifts in the spine, joint mechanics, research, Chiropractic and the arthritic/degenerative process that occurs in the spine if you don’t take care of it.
All you care about is YOU, as you should. But here’s the BIG picture that YOU need to know: of the 360 joints of your body, 76 of them are located throughout your spine and pelvis. This large amount of joint distribution is likely due to the fact your spine serves 3 major functions within your body:
- your spine supports your frame and allows you to walk upright instead of on all fours.
- your spine gives you mobility and allows you to move.
- your spine protects the most important organ of your entire life, your Nervous System.
- Optimal Structure in your spine creates an environment in your body that promotes balance, growth and the ability to adapt to the stresses of life.
