Prepare for the Scares: Local Halloween Haunted Houses
This local list of haunted houses includes the most scary Halloween fun to attractions that children will also enjoy.

Spooky Stans Haunted House
When: 1-4 p.m. Oct. 20
Where: Stans House, 128 Second Avenue West, Shakopee
Why: It’s a family Halloween event, complete with a decorated house, crafts, costumed characters, and treats.
Price: $4 for adults, $2 for students, and free for Scott County Historical Society members.
When: 7-11 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays until Oct. 28
Where: 3525 145th Street West, Shakopee
Why: There is a mile-long haunted walk in the woods, a haunted maze and several attractions, including “Grubbs Pest Control,” “Crystal Caverns” and “Chuckles Pizzeria.”
Price: See the website for ticket information. Discount tickets are available at Walgreens and Papa Murphy’s.
When: 6 p.m. to midnight Fridays and 12 p.m. to midnight Saturdays until Oct. 27
Where: One Valleyfair Drive, Shakopee, MN 55379
Why: There are nine haunted attractions, rides, mazes and a “Fright Feast.” “Planet Spooky” is open during the day for all ages.

Blackout, Nickelodeon Universe, Mall of America, Bloomington
When: 5-10 p.m. Oct. 19-20, 26-27
Where: Mall of America, 5000 Center Court, Bloomington
Why: There will be black-lighting, fog effects, a live DJ, costume contests and no lights on rides. The first 1,000 people to buy ride tickets will receive a treat bag.
Price: $19.99 for a wristband and $3 for a flashing bracelet
Frightmares at Buck Hill, Burnsville
When: 7 p.m. Oct. 17-21, 25-28
Where: 15400 Buck Hill Road, Burnsville
Why: Live music and several attractions, including “The Inferno,” “Fright Factory” and “The Bellharm Lovejoy Asylum.”
Price: $18 on Sundays and $20 on Wednesdays through Saturdays
Scream Town, Chaska
When: Oct. 20*, 26*, 27*, 28
Ticket booths and gates open at 6:30 p.m., and attractions open at 7 p.m.
*=peak nights, during which more people are expected
Where: 7410 Highway 212, Chaska
Why: There is a haunted corn maze and five haunted attractions, including “Circus Asylum,” “Redneck Resort” and “Rabid Alley.”

Tickets can only be purchased with cash at the gate.
The Haunted Basement, The Soap Factory, Minneapolis
This event now is sold out. Tickets for 2013 go on sale in August.
When: Check facebook for times.
Where: 5510 Mahoney Avenue, Minnetonka
Why: The Greystone Manor, returning for its 16th year, is a family-run haunted house with the goal of collecting donations for the local food shelf.
Price: Free with a non-perishable donation.
Shadows and Spirits of the State Capitol, St. Paul
When: 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 18-20, Oct. 25-27
Where: 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul
Why: Visitors will meet actors dressed as “spirits” from Minnesota’s history.
Price: $12 for adults, $11 for seniors and college students, $9 for children ages 6-17; there is a $2 discount for Minnesota Historical Society members.
Victorian Ghost Stories, James J. Hill House, St. Paul
When: 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20-21, 27-28, 31
Where: 240 Summit Avenue, St. Paul
Why: Costumed actors will read ghost stories from Edgar Allen Poe, Edith Wharton and The Brothers Grimm.
Price: $12, or $10 for Minnesota Historical Society members
Dodge Nature Center Halloween Extravaganza
When: 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct 26
Where: Farm Entrance at 1701 Charlton Street, West St. Paul
Why: Walk the friendly trick or treat trail, or, if you dare, the scary trail along the ghostly pond and haunted prairie.
Price: $9, or $6 for Dodge Nature Center members
Disturbia in Suburbia
When: 6:30-9 p.m. Oct. 27, 28 and 31
Where:12215 60th Pl N Plymouth
Why: This year’s theme is “The Sunnydale School For Children.” The haunted house is done at the family’s own home every year and has a different theme. Professional actors and set designers come together to create a fun-filled, family, but scary house for all to enjoy.
Price: Free (food donations encouraged)
