Relay for Life: 15 Years in Scott County
The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society hit the $2 million mark this year.
Despite inclement weather which forced the event to be moved indoors, the fifteenth annual Scott County Relay for Life took place Friday night at Shakopee Junior High School.
42 teams participated, raising $141,000 of the event's ultimate $175,000 goal before the evening began. In its first year, Relay for Life had 12 teams and raised approximately $20,000; since then it has raised more than $2 million for cancer research.
Ruby Winings, a Shakopee resident and one of three committee members in charge of the event, has worked with Scott County Relay for Life since its start 15 years ago.

"I was hooked since the first Relay (for Life)," she said.
Winings, along with teams, sponsors and organizers who have been with Relay for Life since its inception, were recognized during Friday’s opening ceremony. Winings said it was the sense of community at the event that keeps her, and others, coming back year after year.

"You get to see the effects that Relay has and all the lives that we touch," Winings said.
