The Shakopee City Council met Tuesday, July 21. Among the meeting highlights:

City adopts smoke-free ordinance for city parks

The City Council adopted an ordinance prohibiting tobacco use in all city-owned parks and shelters, as well as on the grounds of SandVenture Aquatic Park, Shakopee Ice Arena and the Shakopee Community Center. The ordinance does not prohibit residents from using tobacco when inside their vehicles in a park. The idea for the ordinance was proposed by a group of Shakopee High School students. Council approves final plats for Windermere South Third Addition, Canterbury Southwest First Addition

The City Council approved final plats of:

  • Windermere South Third Addition, approximately 36 acres north of County Highway 78, west of Marystown Road and south of Astoria Drive. The plat includes 33 single-family residential lots and one lot for the existing Friendship Church. More information: Mark Noble, Senior Planner, 952-233-9348.
  • Canterbury Southwest First Addition, which creates a 3.08-acre lot west of Vierling Drive and south of Shenandoah Drive. Greystone Construction plans to build a corporate office on the newly created lot located at the southwest quadrant of the Vierling Drive-Shenandoah Drive intersection. Council approves proposal for archaeological work at Schroeder Brick House

The City Council approved a proposal in the amount for $59,250 from the 106 Group for design services with Confluence for Phase II archaeological services related to the 8.66 acres surrounding the Schroeder Limestone Kiln and Brickyards. The state archaeologist is recommending additional test pits to explore in-depth areas where historic artifacts have been located. The property is being assessed for eligibility on the National Register of Historic Places. In conjunction, the city and its consultant, Confluence, are working on concept planning for the Schroeder house and surrounding property. Council approves plans for downtown storm water project

The City Council approved plans and ordered the advertisement of bids for the Regional BMP at County Government Center Lot A Project. The project includes the construction of an underground stormwater quality best management practice at the Scott County Government Center. The city plans to award bids at the Aug. 18 council meeting with work to be completed in November in advance of the county’s 2021 parking lot resurfacing program. City approves speed zone study for Stagecoach Road

The City Council requested the Minnesota Department of Transportation conduct a speed zone investigation on Stagecoach Road from Preserve Trail to County Highway 101. With recent development along Stagecoach Road, the city’s Traffic Safety Committee determined the current 50-mile-per-hour limit may no longer be appropriate and is asking the state to study current road conditions to set a new speed limit. Council changes insurance of record

The City Council authorized an agreement in the amount of $12,000 a year with Corporate Four Insurance Agency to serve as the city’s insurance agent of record. The change will save the city $8,000 a year. More information: Nate Reinhardt, Finance Director, 952-233-9326.

Council changes future meeting dates

The City Council approved moving its regular Aug. 4 meeting date to Wednesday, Aug. 5 due to Night to Unite and the Nov. 3 meeting to Wednesday, Nov. 4 due to the general election. More information: Lori Hensen, City Clerk, 952-233-9318.
