The third-ranked Shakopee Sabers defeated Marshall 25-16 and 25-22 to finish fifth in the Apple Valley Eagle Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Shakopee went 3-1 in the 16-team tournament, which featured eight of the top 10 ranked Class 3A teams, along with Marshall, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A and Bethlehem Academy, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.

Sixth-ranked Blaine swept No. 2 Bloomington Jefferson to win the tournament championship. Top-rated Lakeville North finish third with a three-game win over fifth-ranked Wayzata.

Shakopee beat Eastview 25-16, 25-22 in the tournament opener, and then fell to Wayzata 25-26, 19-25 in the second round. On Saturday Shakopee defeated No. 8 Eagan 27-25, 17-25 and 15-9 to advance to the fifth place final.

It doesn’t get any easier for Shakopee (13-2 on the season) as the Sabers host Belle Plaine, ranked third in Class 2A, Tuesday in a match starting at 7 p.m.
