Shakopee to Require Landlords to Register With Police

A new ordinance will require landlords to register with the Shakopee Police Department and take a class in its "Crime Free Multi-Housing Program."

Shakopee landlords will be required to register with the Shakopee Police Department and take at least eight hours of training.

“This is a very reasonable ordinance that will address many of the issues we’re facing here in the City of Shakopee with regards to rental housing,” Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate said in a statment. “We expect this ordinance will have a significant impact on reducing crime in our community and improve quality-of-life issues, too.”

The new "Rental Registration Ordinance" mandates that all rental property owners and managers register with the police department and take a class on "crime-free" housing addressing common issues:

  • applicant screening
  • rental agreements
  • identification of illegal activity
  • eviction process
  • the roles of working with the police
  • crime prevention
  • code enforcement and public health
  • licensing and inspections and active property management.
Owners of properties with three or fewer units will be required to attend an eight-hour class, and owners of properties with more than three units will be required to attend three classes.
