The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Shakopee's St. Francis Regional Medical Center continues to expand its health and wellness services with the recent addition of stereotactic breast biopsy services. The Hologic Breast Biopsy System for stereotactic imaging utilizes advanced computer assisted technology, known as digital stereotactic localization, to map the precise site of a breast abnormality before a tissue sample is taken for analysis This new technology, coupled with St. Francis' digital mammography service, means that women living in in the southwest metro area can receive complete breast care services within the St. Francis campus. These procedures are be done by a radiologist and performed in the new stereotactic room in the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
A few key features of St. Francis' new breast biopsy system are:
- The system has a collection of ergonomically engineered cushions that provide targeted pressure point support for all types of stereotactic breast biopsy procedures and body types.
- Provides patients with soft, comfortable, cushioned pads that help create a soothing environment as they undergo the biopsy procedure.
- The system offers image guided breast biopsy, which is less stressful, and reduces the risk of complications in comparison to open surgical biopsy.
Stereotactic breast biopsy procedures started at the hospital on June 20th. Funds raised in the community through the Saints Healthcare Foundation are responsible for acquiring this machine.
