Symptoms | Eden Prairie Chiropractor

How one feels is a poor way to determine one’s level of health. Someone can “feel” fine, but have very poor health. Likewise, someone can “feel” terrible and be quite healthy. How about the overweight individual that is sitting on the couch, eating McDonald’s, with blood pressure soaring through the roof, but ‘feeling’ fine. Ask them how they are doing, “I’m good”, no you’re not. How about another individual that ate bad sushi for lunch. They were not aware that the sushi had been sitting out too long and as a result when they got back home began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea. Now they are ‘feeling’ quite terrible, most people would even call them ‘sick’, but indeed those responses are perfectly healthy and without them this individual could have ended up in the hospital. How about asking someone an hour before having a life-ending heart attack how they are doing, “I’m good, thanks!”

There are plenty of scenarios that reveal how symptoms can be misleading and deceptive. Regardless of the symptom, most individuals want them gone as soon as they appear. Symptoms are a natural part of life and without them we would be in rough shape. Symptoms are meant to protect your body and should be used as a warning sign of dysfunction. They should not be used as a warning sign to run to the cabinet and grab more Ibuprofen, but as a sign to take better care of ourselves. It is up to us to determine what that means. Maybe we need to rest, drink more water, not put weight on something, grab a bite to eat, or not eat/drink what we just had. Learn to listen to your body and respond accordingly, that is the best way to deal with symptoms. With that said, do not wait for a warning sign before deciding to start taking care of yourself and implementing a healthy lifestyle.

Vistitors come into my office all the time with members and I ask them if they would like to have their spine checked and adjusted. Most respond, “No, I’m good." Well, if your spine is subluxated then you are not ‘good’, but I suppose I’ll have to wait until you have a symptom before I can explain that. Have a great day and keep feeling good!
