MINNEAPOLIS — A 1-year-old girl died late last summer from "asphyxia due to smothering," the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Thursday.

The manner of Emoni L. McGrone's death was homicide, according to the examiner. McGrone's death has been under investigation since the child passed away on Aug. 23.

The toddler's sister — a 14-year-old girl — was arrested and charged with first-degree manslaughter, the Star Tribune reported Monday.
