10 Inches Of Snow Possible Friday, NWS Says: MN Weather

The path of a massive snow system has shifted northward, putting the Twin Cities metro area in its path.

TWIN CITIES, MN — The snow system that is set to hit Minnesota Friday has shifted northward, putting the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro in its path. Between 6 and 10 inches of snow could fall in the Twin Cities on Friday alone.

Winter weather watches have been issued for the following counties: Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington, Renville, McLeod, Sibley, Carver, Scott, Dakota, Redwood, Brown, Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rice, Goodhue, Watonwan, Blue Earth, Waseca, Steele, Martin, Faribault, Freeborn, Barron, Rusk, St. Croix, Pierce, Dunn, Pepin, Chippewa, Eau Claire.

The snow will begin to fall after 11 a.m. Friday.

"Snow will be heaviest in the afternoon into the early evening hours with snowfall rates of an inch per hour possible across southern Minnesota into west central Wisconsin," the NWS said.

The snow will lead to slick roads and reduced visibility. Be sure to slow down and allow for extra time to reach your destination.

Before the main event, there is a chance for snow and freezing rain Thursday, which could also make the roads dangerous.

Here's the full NWS forecast for the Twin Cities metro area:

Thursday: A chance of snow and freezing rain before 9am, then a chance of snow between 9am and 11am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 37. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

Friday: Snow, mainly after 11am. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 30. Light and variable wind becoming north northeast 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Friday Night: Snow, mainly before midnight. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 21. North northeast wind around 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Saturday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a steady temperature around 25. West northwest wind around 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a steady temperature around 24. Southwest wind around 10 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 37. South southwest wind around 10 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 19. South southwest wind around 5 mph.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. South wind around 5 mph becoming east southeast in the afternoon.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 25. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 41. South southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. South southeast wind around 5 mph.
