Homestead Credit Refund Deadline Nears For Minnesota Homeowners

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The deadline for Minnesota homeowners to file for the 2024 Homestead Credit Refund is Saturday, Aug. 15, the Minnesota Department of Revenue said this week.

Claims for the 2024 credit expire on that date. The 2025 credit, which includes a one-time 15 percent increase passed by lawmakers and signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz earlier this year, remains available until August 2027. The department is still encouraging homeowners to file now to take advantage of the larger refund.

Nearly 600,000 homeowners claim the Homestead Credit Refund each year, with an average credit of more than $1,330, according to the department.

Eligible homeowners can file for free through the department's electronic filing system.

The department offered several tips for homeowners as they file for property tax refunds.

Homeowners should first check whether they meet the eligibility requirements for a property tax refund, which are listed on the department's website.

Filers should also make sure to include all required information, using figures from the property tax statements issued by their county each spring.

Homeowners can track the status of their refund using the department's Where's My Refund system, which shows what stage a refund is in and whether any action is needed to complete processing. The system will show the date a refund was issued once processing is finished.

The department also pointed to the Senior Citizens' Property Tax Deferral Program, which allows seniors whose property taxes are high relative to their incomes to defer a portion of what they owe each year so they can stay in their homes. Seniors already enrolled in the program may still claim a property tax refund, which is applied to their outstanding loan balance.

The department reviews every return to verify the information submitted, and officials said some returns may take longer to process than others.
