Annual Run with Purpose & Disaster Preparedness Activities

Local disaster relief non-profit to host a marathon to raise funds for disaster victims.

Did you know...

... in Minnesota alone there are 27 tornadoes reported each year? And there have been 1,700 reported since 1950?

... on average, it only takes 45 minutes for all the ingredients that spawn a tornado to fall into place? When you think about it, that's a very short span of time, and if you're family is caught unprepared the effects could be devastating.

Headwaters Relief Organization is a disaster relief collaboration of volunteers that supports the emotional and housing rehabilitation needs of families and communities affected by natural disasters. The volunteers and experts at Headwaters Relief know firsthand that in Minnesota, where we experience tornadoes and floods every year, all members of the community can benefit from disaster preparedness training.

Headwaters Relief has seen firsthand the devastation left in the wake of serious storms and other natural disasters. In the past year Headwaters Relief has worked in communities affected by disaster including Boulder County, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Illinois and most recently New Ulm and here in the Twin Cities. That's why they're making disaster preparedness training available after their sixth annual Run with Purpose 5K on Friday, August 1, 2014. The training will take the form of activities aimed especially at children, since they are at particular risk if unprepared for a natural disaster.

Families are encouraged to attend the casual race beginning at 6:00pm, and stay for the disaster training activities afterward. Disaster preparedness experts will be on hand to help families learn about disaster preparedness in a fun, educational manner. All funds raised by the 5K will go toward victims of natural disasters across the United States, and beyond.

The event will take place at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, Pavilion 3, 9750 Egret Blvd, Coon Rapids, MN. Pets are allowed if leashed, and there will be awards and gifts for top finishers. Online registration is available through July 31st. To learn more about the Headwaters Relief Organization, visit HeadwatersRelief.org.
