Backyard Fires In Minneapolis: Here Are The Rules To Know

Residents can be fined $200 over an illegal fire in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — Bonfire season has arrived in Minneapolis. Many residents will be enjoying more outside time over backyard fires, now that the weather has warmed up.

However, residents should know about city ordinances regulating bonfires:

  • Outdoor recreational fires are only allowed between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • Fires must be less than three feet in diameter and two feet high.
  • No fires during an air pollution advisory
  • No fires when the wind exceeds 10 mph.
  • Burn only untreated, unpainted, dry wood.
    • Burning of cardboard boxes, trash, or debris is not allowed
  • The fire must be at least 25 feet away from a structure or combustible material
  • The fire must be in a fire ring or pit with edges more than six inches high.
  • A hose or fire extinguisher should be present
  • Fires must be attended by someone 18 years or older
  • Fires must be completely out before they are abandoned.
