Bicyclist Ignores Red Light, Is Struck Twice On Hennepin: Police

The bicyclist died following the Monday night crash in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Police say a bicyclist is dead after ignoring a red light in Minneapolis late Monday. Shortly after 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue on a report of a crash.

Investigators believe the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Franklin Avenue and entered into the intersection against a red light.

The bicyclist struck a motorcyclist that was northbound on Hennepin Avenue.

The bicyclist was thrown from the bike and landed in the roadway. He was then struck by a car also traveling north on Hennepin Avenue.

The bicyclist was transported to Hennepin Healthcare where he died of his injuries. A passenger on the motorcycle suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said both the motorcyclist and driver of the car stopped at the scene and are cooperating. Neither speed nor impairment appears to be factors for the drivers of the motorcycle or car, according to investigators.

The Minneapolis Police Department’s traffic unit is investigating and reconstructing the crash. The city crime lab responded to the scene and collected evidence.

Officers interviewed a number of people in the area who may have heard or seen the crash.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the bicyclist.
