Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a deadly condition where the stomach distends with gas and then rotates on its axis.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a deadly condition where the stomach distends with gas and then rotates on its axis. No one quite knows the definitive reason a GDV occurs. One association with GDV is exercising too soon after eating a meal.  As the warm weather approaches, remember to rest your pet for 45 minutes after eating; and it is best to feed smaller, multiple meals throughout the day. Other recommendations to minimize the risk of GDV include: Avoid stress during meal time (separate pets if necessary), DO NOT feed in an elevated food bowl and do not breed dogs with a first degree relative that has a history of GDV (ie: Sibling or parent who has had a GDV).
