For the violins

living in my radio

drinking like fountains

For hot noodles

and hard prairie white

just grated cold on top

and stirred in with a fork

(cheese sauce is only,

my mother could have said,

smooth talk)

For the small flannel quilt

for the baby who changed its mind

perhaps frightened at the thought

of life

it rests now over my legs

and the old ache in my knee

grows quiet beneath this music

For silence, which is

another word for waiting
