Candidates Set For 2021 Minneapolis Mayoral Election: LIST
Police reform and public safety are sure to be the signature issues of the 2021 Minneapolis mayoral campaign.

MINNEAPOLIS — The deadline for candidates to run for an office in Minneapolis this fall has passed. Seventeen people plan to run for mayor, including incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey.
Police reform and public safety are sure to be the signature issues of the mayoral campaign. During Frey's first term as mayor, two former Minneapolis police officers were convicted and sentenced for murder:
- Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder in George Floyd's death in April 2021.
- In the April of 2019, former office Mohamed Noor was convicted in the 2017 killing of Justine Damond.
Following Floyd's death last year, the Minneapolis City Council unsuccessfully pushed to dismantle the city's police department. Frey publicly came out against the plan and has criticized the city council for trying to cut police department funding.
