On Saturday, the Minnesota Department of Health announced the state's first COVID-19-related death. The patient was a Ramsey County resident in their 80s. She died on March 19.
The person had recently tested positive for COVID-19 and was the contact of an earlier confirmed case.
"Gwen and I extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones during this time of loss," said Gov. Tim Walz in a statement. "As COVID-19 continues to spread in Minnesota, we must all do what we can to keep each other safe."
"My heart is with the family, friends, and neighbors who are grieving," said Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. "This loss is deeply felt by our entire community. Now more than ever, each of us must do our part to prevent the spread of this virus, especially to our most vulnerable Minnesotans."
Also on Saturday, Walz signed Executive Order 20-13, which authorizes the Minnesota National Guard to provide assistance. The Guard’s initial mission is to transport personal protective equipment (PPE) in storage at Camp Ripley to the Minnesota Department of Health warehouse in Saint Paul and also assist with planning and coordination of PPE supply delivery through the State Emergency Operations Center.
Executive Order 20-13 helps address the critically low supply of PPE in Minnesota’s hospitals and health care facilities, as well as the delivery delays from the federal government’s Strategic National Stockpile, according to a news release.
