MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Nearly a dozen people outside the Hennepin County Jail in downtown Minneapolis were arrested after a demonstration "turned destructive" overnight, authorities said.

The protests were in response to the police shooting of a Black man in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Sheriff Dave Hutchinson said 11 people were arrested and are being held on probable cause riot, damage to property and unlawful assembly.

Demonstrators broke windows at the detention center and threatened to breach the security of the jail, the sheriff said. One officer suffered a broken hand during an altercation with demonstrators, according to police.

At one point, approximately 100 people were gathered outside the detention center, authorities estimate. The crowd dispersed shortly after 1 a.m. after deputies made the arrests, police said.

Demonstrators gathered downtown earlier in the evening and marched through the streets of Minneapolis, stopping at a number of locations before ending up again in front of the detention center.

"We fully support peaceful protests, but we can not and will not allow demonstrators to destroy property or jeopardize the safety and security of our inmates, our deputies and our jail," Hutchinson said in a statement.

Officers from Minneapolis Police and Metro Transit assisted deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
