Does your pet have a torn toenail?

Torn toenails can be very painful and uncomfortable for pets. Read on to see the signs of a possible torn toenail and what to do if you suspect your pet has one.

'Tis the season for torn toenails!  The incidence of broken or torn nails goes way up in the winter, likely due to cold temperatures causing the nails to become brittle.  Also, poor footing on ice will make dogs rely more on the nails for traction which may cause a break.  Typically bleeding, limping and licking of the affected toe are seen.  Repairing the nail is essential to restoring the dogs comfort.  If you suspect your dog has broken a nail, make an appointment with your veterinarian to assess it further.
