Are electric fences safe for dogs? Electric fences have many pluses. They are low profile, less expensive then a traditional fence, and work for most dogs. There are some things to consider, however, before deciding to get an electric fence.
Electric fences don’t keep other animals out of your yard. This is especially a problem if your dog doesn’t like other dogs. In addition, some dogs will have “boundary aggression” and can run up to the electric fence line and bark, thus scaring people walking along the side walk or street if they don’t know if the dog will stay in the yard.
It is also possible for your dog to break through the electric fence boundary. If the battery has gone dead and the dog doesn’t get a “beep” alerting him or her that she is near the fence line, she could cross out of the yard. Also, some dogs that are highly agitated by people or dogs walking by may get so distraught that they don’t care if they get zapped running through the fence line.
