Views of Jews in 19th Century Denmark: From Pro-Semitic Hans Christian Andersen to Anti-Semitic Søren Kierkegaard

The University of Minnesota Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to present its Ninth Annual Community Lecture Series, in cooperation with synagogues and other sponsoring partners across the greater Twin Cities. Join us as writers and thinkers from varied fields address intriguing questions relevant to the Jewish experience today.


A controversial book, written by Peter Tudvad, about Kierkegaard as an anti-Semite was recentlypublished; Hans Christian Andersen's pro-Semitic stances are well-documented. Prof. Houe will use thesetwo towering authors as points from which to overview the landscape of philo- and anti-Semitic sentiments inDanish/Nordic 19th century culture and society, and even to extend the perspective into contemporary culture,where the debate around Tudvads's book has been especially revealing.
