George Floyd Killing: The Timeline Of Cop Convictions, Sentences

Only one criminal trial remains this fall in the death of George Floyd. Here's the timeline of legal events that have led up to it.

MINNEAPOLIS — On the day that jury selection was set to begin in his trial, former Minneapolis police officer J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty Monday in the death of George Floyd.

Kueng faced state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. But under the plea deal, the count of aiding and abetting murder will be dismissed.

Kueng was set to stand trial with his former colleague, ex-officer Tou Thao.

The two were expected to stand trial together, but now Thao will stand alone in a stipulated bench trial.

Former Minneapolis police officers Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Kueng, and Thao have all already been convicted and sentenced in federal court.

Here's the timeline of trials that took place following Floyd's death:

May 25, 2020: George Floyd is killed gasping for air under the knee of Derek Chauvin outside of Cup Foods on 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis. J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao assist Chauvin at the scene.

May 31, 2020: Gov. Tim Walz shifts prosecution in Floyd’s death from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.

June 3, 2020: Ellison charges Chauvin, Kueng, Lane, and Thao with second-degree unintentional murder in Floyd’s death, on top of the charges of second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder already filed against the defendants.

March 8, 2021: Chauvin's murder trial in Floyd's death begins.

April 20, 2021: A Hennepin County jury finds Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd.

June 25, 2021: Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill sentences Chauvin to 22 ½ years in state prison.

December 15, 2021: Chauvin pleads guilty in federal court to violating George Floyd’s civil rights. Under his plea deal, he will serve his sentence in federal prison. His federal and state prison sentences will be served concurrently.

Feb. 24, 2022: Lane, Kueng, and Thao are all convicted by a jury in federal court of violating Floyd's civil rights.

May 18, 2022: Lane pleads guilty to state charges of second-degree manslaughter, and under the plea deal, the charge of second-degree murder is dismissed. Under his plea deal, he will serve his sentence in federal prison. His federal and state prison sentences will be served concurrently.

July 21, 2022: Lane is sentenced in federal court to 30 months in federal prison.

July 27, 2022: Kueng is sentenced in federal court to 36 months in federal prison. Thao is sentenced in federal court to 42 months in prison.

Sept. 21, 2022: Lane is sentenced in state court to 36 months.
