COLORADO — Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado apologized after suggesting that U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minneapolis, was a suicide bomber. Boebert also said that Omar was a member of a "jihad squad."

Boebert reportedly made those comments Nov. 20 during a campaign event, which was recorded and posted on Twitter.

"The other night on the House floor was not my first ‘jihad squad’ moment," Boebert told a crowd at her campaign event.

Boebert claimed that while getting into an elevator at the U.S. Capitol, a police officer ran toward them.

"I look to my left and there she is. Ilhan Omar. I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine.'"

"Oh look, the 'jihad squad’ decided to show up for work today," Boebert added.

Omar said the entire story that Boebert told during the campaign event was fake.

On Monday, Omar said she ended an "unproductive call" with Boebert.

"Today, I graciously accepted a call from Rep. Lauren Boebert in the hope of receiving a direct apology for falsely claiming she met me in an elevator, suggesting I was a terrorist, and for a history of anti-Muslim hate," Omar said in a statement.

"Instead of apologizing for her Islamophobic comments and fabricated lies, Rep. Boebert refused to publicly acknowledge her hurtful and dangerous comments. She instead doubled down on her rhetoric. I decided to end the unproductive call."

The Minneapolis Democrat also called for Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy and Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "to take appropriate action."

Omar is the first Somali American member of Congress, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota, and one of the first two Muslim American women elected to Congress.
