TWIN CITIES, MN — Gov. Tim Walz Tuesday will announce new restrictions his office will implement in order to slow down the recent spikes in virus cases and deaths in the state and throughout the nation.

Walz's address will come as families across Minnesota discuss plans for Thanksgiving gatherings.

Current state guidelines ask Minnesotans to keep gatherings small, with indoor gatherings to 10 people or fewer and outdoor gatherings to 25 people or fewer. Because traveling "increases the chance of getting and spreading COVID-19," state health officials say "staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others."

The Minnesota Department of Health on Monday reported 19 COVID-19 deaths and 3,930 new cases. A total of 2,675 Minnesotans have died from the virus since March.

Dr. Saugar Maripuri, a nephrologist for Hennepin Healthcare, is among those in the medical field asking Walz to place new restrictions on public gatherings. Maripuri says the state is at a "tipping point" for hospital capacity.

It's not clear how drastic or wide-ranging new restrictions from the governor's office will be.

Walz Monday called on all Minnesotas to get tested for COVID-19 as the state opened more facilities.

Walz will address the state live at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Patch will carry a livestream of the speech.
