Jesus Christ Superstar was created at the end of the turbulent ‘60s, and at its core is a sign of the times: social and political rebellion. Jesus speaks radical truth to power from the margins of society, and the status quo is shaken. Here and now, as then, unequal distribution of wealth and power still challenge the fulfillment of our dreams of freedom and justice for all.

If Jesus came to the Twin Cities today, he would most certainly find his way to soup kitchens more often than boardrooms. This is where our production is set. The Lake Harriet Players’ contemporary interpretation of this classic rock opera brings the timeworn conflict to the streets of the city.

As Jesus’ radical teachings are increasingly embraced and tensions ratchet ever higher, Judas seriously questions the enlightened motives and methods of the charismatic leader. The resulting cataclysmic events are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality.
