Mayor Frey Goes To Washington To Push End Of ICE’s Metro Surge
The Minneapolis mayor is meeting with lawmakers and mayors as the Senate debates DHS funding.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey traveled to Washington, D.C., on Thursday to urge federal leaders to end Operation Metro Surge, the large-scale immigration enforcement campaign that has brought thousands of ICE and Border Patrol agents into Minnesota.
Frey is attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he is meeting with mayors and members of Congress from across the country to press for an end to the operation and what his office describes as other unlawful ICE activities.
The mayor is also participating in national discussions on how cities can coordinate public safety efforts while upholding the rule of law.

Since Operation Metro Surge began, Frey said Minneapolis has seen families separated, small businesses suffer economic losses, and increased strain placed on local law enforcement agencies.
“Minneapolis may be where we’ve seen one of the largest ICE deployments in the country, but it will not be the last if we fail to act,” Frey said in a statement. “I’m going to Washington to make the case for ending this strategy and replacing it with approaches that build trust, improve safety, and put our residents first.”

While in Washington, Frey is scheduled to meet with federal lawmakers to discuss the impacts of ICE operations on Minneapolis as the U.S. Senate debates the 2026 budget for the Department of Homeland Security.
The trip follows conversations earlier this week between Frey, President Donald Trump, and Border Czar Tom Homan, during which the mayor said he made clear that his primary request was the immediate end of Operation Metro Surge.
Frey is expected to return to Minneapolis later Thursday following the day’s meetings.
