Minneapolis 2021 Election: Filing Period Begins Tuesday
The mayor and city council seats are among the offices up for election this fall in Minneapolis.
MINNEAPOLIS — The official filing period for candidates who want to run for office in Minneapolis this year opened Tuesday. Candidates have until Aug. 10 to file in person at the downtown Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services office.
Here are all of the offices that are up for reelection in Minneapolis in 2021:
- Mayor
- City Council
- Board of Estimate and Taxation (two at-large seats)
- Minneapolis Park Board
- District seats (six seats)
- At-Large (three seats)

- Candidate filing: July 27 — Aug. 10
- Early voting period: Sept. 17 — Nov. 1
- Early registration deadline: Tuesday, Oct. 12
- Suggested deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot: Tuesday, Oct. 19
- Election Day, deadline to return mail-in ballot: Tuesday, Nov. 2. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m
Mayor Jacob Frey will run for reelection
Frey was first elected as Minneapolis mayor in 2017. In January, Frey announced he will be seeking reelection.

Other mayoral candidates who've launched Minneapolis mayoral campaigns include community organizer Sheila Nezhad, former state representative Kate Knuth, and legal mediator Aj Awed.
