Minneapolis Is Down 200 Police Officers: Report

The city hemorrhage police offices following the street violence that broke out after the death of George Floyd.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis is down around 200 working police officers in 2021. A total of 155 officers are currently on an extended leave, with many on leave for PTSD. Another 24 left in January, taking the buyout that was offered to city employees as Minneapolis faces a budget crunch.

The city hemorrhage police offices following the street violence that broke out after the death of George Floyd.

"This presents operational challenges for me as chief," Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo told the Star Tribune. "We need the stability in the sworn workforce."

Arradondo is now asking the City Council for $6.4 million to recruit new officers.
