Minneapolis Public School Teacher Wins Presidential Award
The South High math teacher will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at her discretion.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A math teacher from South High School in Minneapolis has been given the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
President Barack Obama Monday named 213 mathematics and science teachers as recipients of the award, and South High math teacher Morgan Fierst made the list.
Fierst is one of only two Minnesota teachers to receive the award this year. Lisa Houdek, a science teacher at Central Senior High School in St. Paul, was also named.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded to outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers from across the country.
The educators will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, DC Sept. 8, according to a news release.

Winners of the award receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion.
"The recipients of this award are integral to ensuring our students are equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are vital to our Nation’s success," Obama said.
"As the United States continues to lead the way in the innovation that is shaping our future, these excellent teachers are preparing students from all corners of the country with the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills that help keep us on the cutting-edge."
