Minnesota Politician Drawn On Cover Of The New Yorker
The cover for the upcoming issue is titled "Welcome to Congress" and was illustrated by Barry Blitt.

MINNEAPOLIS — It's not every day a Minnesotan is depicted on the cover of a major American newspaper or magazine, but this month's issue of The New Yorker features one of the state's rising political stars.
Democrat Ilhan Omar was one of two Muslims elected to Congress Tuesday. Omar, who will represent Minnesota's Fifth District, will be the only Somali-American in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Omar and her family escaped civil war and lived in a Kenyan refugee camp before moving to Minneapolis.

Artist Barry Blitt included Omar in the cover of the upcoming Nov. 19 issue of the New Yorker, which celebrates the fact that more women will be serving in Congress than ever before.
"Younger, non-incumbent, and first-time female candidates fared strikingly well," writes Margaret Talbot in her piece, "How Women Won Big In The Midterms."

"Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan’s Thirteenth District, and Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota state legislator who came to the U.S. as a twelve-year-old refugee from Somalia, will be the first Muslim women in Congress."
Bustle notes that in addition to Omar, newly-elected House members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sharice Davids are also featured.
