Minnesota Weather: March Will Begin With Bitter Cold

The long-range forecast for Minnesota shows February's extreme cold will continue well into next month.

TWIN CITIES, MN — There's good news if you were hoping February's trends of heavy snowfall and extreme cold would last into March. The long-range forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows temperatures well below normal will be with us for at least the next 14 days.

More snow is on the way this week. "Central Minnesota and northern Wisconsin will see a couple inches of snow on Tuesday," says the National Weather Service.

"Another system will bring a more widespread snow Friday and Friday night."

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, dozens of abandoned vehicles still litter southern Minnesota highways and interstates.

Here are the latest road updates:

  • Interstate 35: Closed from Owatonna to the border for the foreseeable future. No timeline on when it will reopen.
  • Interstate 90: Blocked westbound from Highway 52. Barricades in place.
  • Highway 52: Traffic is moving.
  • Highway 63: Open north of Racine. MnDOT is working south to the Iowa border.
  • Highway 14: One lane is open in each direction.
  • Secondary highways are still impassable.

Today: Scattered flurries with a slight chance of snow before 3pm, then scattered flurries between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 5. Wind chill values as low as -17. Northwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -8. Wind chill values as low as -18. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming northeast after midnight.

Tuesday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 9. Wind chill values as low as -17. Light east wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tuesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 5. East wind around 5 mph becoming northwest after midnight. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Wednesday: Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 15. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -2. West wind around 5 mph.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of snow before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 19. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 4. West southwest wind around 5 mph becoming east northeast after midnight.
