Minnneapolis Mayor, Police Chief Announce Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Policy

Transgender people "are facing higher levels of discrimination and higher levels of violence," Mayor Betsy Hodges said Wednesday.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Mayor Betsy Hodges and Police Chief Janeé Harteau announced Minneapolis Police Department's new transgender and gender non-conforming policy last week.

"The idea behind the policy is to create established guidelines based on courtesy and dignity for the appropriate treatment of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals," read a news release from police.

"There is an ugly national climate about a whole bunch of issues right now, including the rights and humanity of transgender people," Hodges said at a press conference Wednesday.
