Mpls. Police Chief to Union Head: Stop Wearing Uniform in Interviews

Harteau ordered Kroll to stop wearing his uniform when giving interviews as a labor union representative.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — It appears that the tension between Police Federation President Bob Kroll and other Minneapolis officials has not subsided.

KARE 11 reported that Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau has ordered Kroll to stop wearing his uniform when giving interviews in his capacity as a labor union representative.

Harteau told Kroll in an email, "As you know, by virtue of the clothing allowance, MPD uniforms are paid for by the city of Minneapolis. The city controls their use."

When reached for comment, Kroll told KARE 11, "That's true. But I'll be fighting that and winning."

In Harteau's email to Kroll, she also said "As Chief of Police, I expect all MPD employees — particularly those in leadership ranks such as lieutenant — to set a good example for fellow MPD employees and a good example to the public. This letter is a reminder as well as a direct order that you wear your MPD uniform only for MPD-sanctioned purposes. If you are unclear about those purposes, you must schedule a meeting with Professional Standards Deputy Chief Glampe to discuss. 'MPD-sanctioned purposes' does not include speaking in your capacity as a labor union representative. Therefore, I am also directing you to not wear an MPD uniform when speaking in your capacity as a union representative."

Kroll made news last week after four off-duty Minneapolis police officers who signed up to work the Minnesota Lynx game walked off the job when players showed support for Black Lives Matter.

Kroll praised the officers for quitting, saying "I commend them for it." Kroll went on to jab the Lynx organization directly.

"They only have four officers working the event because the Lynx have such a pathetic draw," he said.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges then took to social media to respond to Kroll's comments.
