Gov. Tim Walz Sunday authorized Minnesota National Guard to support the wildfire response.

ACROSS MINNESOTA — Wildfires that broke out in northern Minnesota Sunday will bring more smoke to the Twin Cities this week. The metro's air quality will likely be reduced starting Tuesday.

Gov. Tim Walz Sunday authorized Minnesota National Guard to support the wildfire response.

"This summer, Minnesota has experienced abnormally high temperatures and a historic drought resulting in dry conditions conducive to wildfires," Walz said in a news release.

"I am proud that our Service Members have again answered the call to serve their fellow Minnesotans." Walz's executive order will remain in effect until the fires are extinguished.

The wildfires broke out Sunday as much of Minnesota faces unprecedented drought conditions. According to the federal drought monitory, just over 42 percent of the state is in an "extreme" drought, and over 7 percent is in an "exceptional" drought.
